Candle Care Myths Debunked India 2026 — 10 Things Everyone Gets Wrong

Indian candle buyers receive a lot of well-intentioned but incorrect candle care advice — from Instagram captions, WhatsApp forwards, and even some candle brands whose guidance contradicts the science. Wrong candle care leads to tunnelling, poor fragrance throw, short burn life, and frustrated buyers who blame the candle rather than the care. This guide corrects the 10 most common Indian candle care misconceptions.

Myth

The Reality

What To Do Instead

Myth 1: You should trim the wick before the FIRST burn

FALSE. The candle is sold with the right wick length for the first burn. Over-trimming before the first burn causes difficulty lighting.

Trim before the SECOND burn and every burn after. First burn: light as supplied at 5-6mm.

Myth 2: Blowing out a candle is bad

PARTIALLY TRUE but overstated. Blowing gently from an angle is fine and the most common extinguishing method for soy wax.

Blow gently at an angle, or use a snuffer if you want to prevent any smoke puff.

Myth 3: You should burn a new candle for 1 hour for the first burn

FALSE — this is the most damaging myth for soy wax in concrete jars. One hour is NOT enough for a wide jar.

First burn must reach the full wax pool edge — allow 3-4 hours minimum. Inadequate first burn = permanent tunnelling.

Myth 4: Refrigerating a candle makes it burn longer

FALSE. Refrigeration causes condensation on the wax surface, introduces moisture to the wick, and may crack the concrete jar. No effect on burn time.

Store candles at room temperature, away from direct sunlight.

Myth 5: A candle that has white patches (frosting) is defective

FALSE. Frosting is a natural characteristic of natural soy wax crystallising — it is a sign of REAL soy wax, not a defect.

Frosting is cosmetic only. Burn the candle normally. It does not affect performance.

Myth 6: Scented candles should smell strong when cold

Partially. While good cold throw is a quality indicator, soy wax has naturally lighter cold throw than paraffin. Judge hot throw after 30 minutes of burning.

If hot throw is strong after 30 minutes, the candle is performing correctly regardless of cold throw intensity.

Myth 7: You can reuse the wax from a finished candle

SAFE but with limitations. Soy wax can be melted and reused in a wax warmer. Do NOT repour into a new jar without adding fresh fragrance — the fragrance has been significantly depleted.

Use spent wax in a tart warmer for gentle fragrance. Do not re-candle with it.

Myth 8: A candle flame that dances and flickers is burning incorrectly

FALSE. A gently flickering flame is normal and attractive. A violently flickering or blowing flame indicates a draft — move the candle away from AC, fan, or open window.

Shield from drafts. Light flickering is normal and creates atmosphere.

Myth 9: Expensive candles always smell better

FALSE. Price does not directly correlate with fragrance quality. A Rs.199 candle with a well-blended Indian fragrance in the right wax will outperform a Rs.1,500 branded candle with a generic synthetic fragrance.

Judge fragrance quality after the first 30-minute burn, not by price.

Myth 10: Candles expire and become useless after 1 year

PARTIALLY TRUE. Soy wax candles do not expire in the safety sense, but top note fragrance intensity declines after 6-12 months. They are still functional — just less intensely fragrant.

Use candles within 6 months of purchase for best fragrance experience. Store in cool, dark conditions.
