Soy Candles

Stearin Wax Candles India 2026 — What They Are and When to Use Them

Stearin (also called stearic acid or stearin wax) is one of India's most widely used but least discussed candle wax additives. Unlike soy wax, paraffin, or beeswax — which are used as primary waxes — stearin is primarily used as a hardening additive in paraffin candle production. However, it has some standalone applications in Indian candle making that are worth understanding.

This guide explains what stearin is, how it is used in Indian candle production, its advantages and limitations, and whether Indian soy wax candle makers have any reason to use it.

What Is Stearin Wax?

Stearin (glyceryl tristearate) is a naturally occurring saturated fat derived from animal or plant fats — either beef tallow (animal-derived) or palm/soy fatty acids (plant-derived). In India, stearin is available in both forms; candle-grade stearin from plant sources is preferred by brands with vegan or sustainability positioning.

Physical properties: bright white, odourless, hard solid at room temperature, melting point approximately 54-56 degrees Celsius. Its primary functional characteristic: when added to paraffin wax, it makes the wax harder, more opaque, and gives it a higher melting point.

How Stearin Is Used in Indian Candle Making

In Paraffin Candle Production

Most mass-market Indian paraffin candles — including the small white pillar candles used for pooja and power cuts — contain 5-20% stearin as a hardening agent. Stearin makes paraffin candles: harder and more resistant to warping in Indian summer heat, more opaque and whiter in appearance (undiluted paraffin is slightly translucent), and easier to unmold for pillar candle production.

As an Additive in Soy Pillar Blends

Soy wax's low melting point (40-45C) makes freestanding soy pillar candles challenging in Indian summer. Some Indian candle makers add 10-15% stearin to their soy wax for pillar candle applications — this raises the effective melting point of the blend, improving structural stability in warm Indian rooms without switching entirely to paraffin.

Should Indian Soy Wax Container Candle Makers Use Stearin?

For container candles poured into concrete gypsum jars: no. Stearin serves no functional purpose in container candle making with soy wax. The concrete jar provides structural support that makes stearin's hardening function irrelevant. Adding stearin to a container soy wax candle increases cost, may affect fragrance throw, and adds no customer-perceivable benefit.

The use case for stearin in Indian candle making is specific: adding to soy wax for freestanding pillar candles or to paraffin wax for mass-market pillar production. For the standard concrete jar soy wax candle that is Karessa's primary product focus, stearin is not needed.

Wax Type

Stearin Needed?

Why/Why Not

Soy wax container candle (in concrete jar)

No

Container provides structure; stearin adds cost with no benefit

Soy wax pillar candle (freestanding)

Optional — 10-15% for Indian summer stability

Raises melting point, reduces summer deformation risk

Paraffin pillar candle

Yes — standard practice

Makes paraffin harder, whiter, easier to unmold

Beeswax candle

No — beeswax naturally hard

Adding stearin to beeswax reduces its natural purity

Coconut wax candle

No — coconut wax naturally soft enough for containers

Stearin would make coconut wax too hard for container use

Sourcing Stearin in India for Pillar Candle Production

If you do need stearin for pillar candle production: VedaOils stocks both animal-derived and plant-derived stearin. IndiaMART has multiple wholesale chemical suppliers offering stearin in 1kg to 25kg quantities at Rs.100-Rs.200 per kg. Always specify 'candle-grade' or 'food-grade' stearin — industrial grades may contain impurities.

For container candle production (no stearin needed): source pre-sealed jars direct from karessacandles.com/collections/concrete-candle-jars.
